Botswana: DCI +0.01%, USD 545k

Letshego was the only game in town today as it accounted for 99% of the day’s turnover. The name closed again at 230t while outside of this name nothing happened.

Egypt: Closed for the day.

Kenya: NSE 20 -0.14%, USD 6.6m

The equities market was less upbeat during the day compared to the two previous sessions as some of the leading movers’ experienced additional supply leading to lower prices. Foreign investors accounted for 64.8% of trades compared to 64% in the previous session but buy activity was skewed towards different counters. Cement sector was a favorite with ARM cement and Bamburi experiencing net inflows. Among the leading movers, Equity Bank fell the most shedding 3.6% on foreign investor selling. KCB and Coop Bank were unchanged during the day as demand and supply matched. Safaricom lost 1.6% on weak demand. Total Kenya and KenolKobil were also on a losing streak although this was on generally thin volumes. EABL was gaining earlier in the day but lost ground in the afternoon as supply streamed into the brewer.

Mauritius: Semdex -0.12%, USD 436k

The lack of interest in Mauritius continues as volumes remain on the thin side. The Semdex gained 7bps while the Sem-7 fell by 4bps. The losers in the Sem-7 were NMH (-35bps, Rs71.75) and Terra (-23bps, Rs42.50) while the only gainer was Alteo (+14bps, Rs36.35).

Nigeria: ASI -1.35%, USD 32.57m

Softness was evident across the board in Nigeria as both the banks (-99bps) and the consumers (-1.06%) saw profit taking. The bank that took the biggest hit was FBNH which fell by 5.72% to N17.30 while most of the other banks were slightly negative. Skye Bank gained 1.07% to N4.71 and was the only real gainer in the sector. Consumers saw some selling activity with Unilever (-8%, N56.12) although it was on thin volumes while Dangote Sugar (-3.67%, N10.50) and NB (-93bps, N155) also lost ground. The cements also fell with Ashaka Cement closing limit down and net offered at N23.85) while Dangote Cement fell by 1.54% to N192.

South Africa: Top 40 -1.50%, USD 2.11bn

The JSE ended the day lower with the Top 40 Index falling 1.50% to close at 34,670 while value traded amounted to USD 2.11bn. Resources were the day's biggest losers with the Index falling 1.67% followed by Industrials and Financials which fell 1.57% and 1.01% respectively. The Rand was trading at 10.20 and 13.39 to the USD and EUR respectively by the time local markets closed.

Zambia: LuSE +0.13%, USD 266k

Decent day to end the week with value traded amounting to USD 266k thanks to a cross in ZNCO. The names that traded included AELZ, CEC, FQMZ, PUMA, REIZ, ZAMBREW, ZNCO and ZMBF. ZNCO was the biggest contributor towards turnover with value traded in the name amounting to USD 249k. FQMZ was the second biggest contributor towards turnover with value traded in the name amounting to USD 15k.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.29%, Mining +0.49%, USD 2.85m

With elections just around the corner the ZSE bull run seems to have lost traction with the industrial index succumbing for the third successive trading session closing 0.29% softer at 217.66pts while the mining index was up 0.49% at 71.45pts. However other indicators were in the positive with aggregate turnover improving by 136% to $2.85m buoyed by a significant parcel in Delta, which traded unchanged at previous levels. On the other hand volume traded was up 150% at 15m shares with FBC contributing the bulk of the shares. Foreign participation improved by 571% to $2m while foreign sales were a paltry $0.04m. Dragging the market were losses in telecoms Econet and retailer Innscor which shed 3% apiece to 65c and 94c respectively. Aico retreated 6% to 7.5c while Dawn, after the announcement of appointment of new CE tumbled 8% to 1.01. Cement manufacturer PPC shrunk 0.79% to 251c.
