Botswana: DCI +0.52%, USD 465k

Activity picked up in Gaborone today but was still rather dull as value traded amounted to USD 465k with Sechaba and BIHL accounting for 81% of turnover.

Egypt: EGX 30 +0.70%, USD 79m

The market managed to continue with its positive sentiment leaving the EGX30 to end the day up 0.70% to close at 7,0086.80 points. The market continued to trade low volumes compared to recent turnovers, with a total turnover of USD 79m. The market managed to keep its positive momentum lead by buying accumulation from GCC and local institutions targeting names such as EKHO, ESRS and TMGH leaving each to end the day up 6.59%, 2.53% and 1.19% respectively. Local retail investors ended the day as net sellers with names such as WATP, UNIT and EIUD witnessing selling pressure leaving each to down 1.72%, 0.64% and 0.47% respectively.

Kenya: NSE 20 +1.03%, USD 9.4m

Activity continues to impress in Nairobi as value traded amounted to $9.4m. Equity Bank (+3.1%) managed to recover from it's recent sell-off as foreigners accounted for the bulk of the purchases in the name. Foreigners were howver net sellers in Equity Bank (91.7% of total sales). EABL (-0.7%) came under a small bit of pressure as foreigners (66.9%) dominated sales in the brewer. Mumias climbed 4.6% as the sugar miller was quoted by the Business Daily as planning to revive the much delayed TARDA project which is expected to yield low cost sugar. In the near term, the sugar sector appears to be under challenge ahead of an expiry of a duty protection period next month.

Mauritius: Semdex unch, USD 2.09m

The market was little changed today in Port Louis on much higher than normal volumes. The bulk of the action took place in MCB as the name softened by 23bps to Rs215.50 while SBM fell by 94bps to Rs1.05. Elsewhere in the Sem-7 we saw ENL Land fall by 1.01% to Rs 49.50 while IBL gained an impressive 4.85% to Rs108.

Nigeria: ASI +1.11%, USD 19.01m

It was a rather slow day in Lagos as activity slowed to $19.01m. Oando ($2.72m), Zenith ($2.26m) and First Bank ($2.19m) drove turnover. Banks (+0.86%) were rather strong thanks to the tier-1 banks with Guaranty Trust Bank (+1.98%) and First Bank (+1.90%) driving the sector higher. Consumers (+0.61%) also ended the day firmer with Dangote Sugar (+2.25%) and Nestle (+1.73%) being amongst the best performers. Danogote Cement managed to bounce back with the market heavyweight gaining +2.21%.

South Africa: Top 40 -0.11%, USD 1.33bn

The JSE ended the day lower with the Top 40 Index falling 0.11% to close at 42,195 while value traded amounted to USD 1.33bn. Resources were the day's biggest losers with the Index falling 1.41% while Financials and Industrials gained 0.73% and 0.27% respectively. The Rand was trading at 10.84 and 14.68 to the USD and EUR respectively by the time local markets closed.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.31%, Mining -4.14%, USD 1.47m

Bears continued to outweigh gainers on the ZSE for a sixth successive session as investors further discount most stocks. This is against a background of weak fundamentals on the broad economic front coming into 2014. The industrials pared -0.31% to close call at 200.85 pts. The three top capitalized stocks on the bourse Econet, Delta and Innscor all lost value to drag the industrials lower. Econet fell 0.02% to 62c while Delta went down by a further 1.47% to 134c. Innscor saw a 0.14% decline to 79.89c to cap the top capitalised stocks among the fallers. The minings index tumbled 4% to 36.78 pts further widening their year to date loss to 19.68% with just over three weeks of trading this year. BNC was 9.7% worse off at 1.49c to drive mining losses while Hwange fell 2% to 6c.
