Movers & Shakers: March 23, 2012


Botswana: DCI +0.01%, Vols USD 32k

Not much happening on the last day of the week with turnover at USD32k. BIHL had the lion share accounting for 88.5% of the day's turnover with 19,365 shares trading at 1055t. Choppies was unchanged at 150t. Cresta traded level at 110t on 4,453 shares.

Egypt: Closed today

Kenya: NSE 20 +0.58%, Vols USD 4.96m

Very active day again in Kenya today with value traded amounting to $4.96m thanks to the 2 big banks EQBNK and KNCB. There were a number of large crosses in Equity Bank, a total of 5.63m shares traded in the name with noticeable foreign interest on the buy side (closing at 18.65, up 2.19% for the day). KNCB also enjoyed a lot of foreign participation with 4.30m shares changing hands in quite a few large crosses, the name gained 2.30% to close at 22.25. EABL enjoyed another good day gaining 0.50% to close at 200.00 with 454k shares traded in the counter. The market managed to close the week on the front foot with the NSE 20 Index gaining 0.58% to close at 3,312.85.

Nigeria:

There was a disruption to trading in Nigeria today meaning that accurate data is not available at this time. From the data available which is limited to the second session i.e. after the break, the banks took a smack with no names closing in the black. All we can see on our screens at the close, across the three tiers, of banks is red red red. FBN took the biggest hit down -4.92% with the best performer in the top tier being GTB down -2.2%. Zenith and FBN were the most active names. Guinness and Cadbury were noteable gainers +3.03% and +1.38% respectively.

South Africa: Top 40 Unch, Vols USD 1.6bn

A much quieter day than yesterday when we saw a val traded in excess of $2bn. Golds performed well off the back of a percentage gain on the spot px. Yesterday's gainers finished lower today - defensive names. Resources and financial's were stronger while industrials closed weaker. Note that the construction index was up +1.4%.

Zambia: LuSE +0.23%, Vols USD 38k

Another quiet day in Zambia with value traded amounting to USD 38k. The names that traded included CECZ, FQMZ, PUMA, ZMBF and ZSUG. FQMZ was the biggest contributor towards turnover with value traded in the name amounting to USD 26k. CECZ was the second biggest contributor towards turnover with value traded in the name amounting to USD 5k. Jinchuan Group Ltd of China agreed to increase the pay of workers at its Chibuluma copper mine in Zambia by 17%.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.10%, Mining Unch, Vols USD 443k

The Industrial Index gave-up part of week long gains, ending the day 0.10% lower at 139.26pts while Mining's remained unchanged. Turnover stood at USD443k. Aico was down 1.50c to 17c. Banker CBZ lost 0.55c to 5c. Fidelity lost 1c to 16c. PPC ended 5c higher at 260c. Cement company Lafarge was amongst the few gainers, closing 6c higher at 71c. Natfoods added on 5c to 120c. Flagold and Hwange traded flat at 11c and 27c.
