Botswana: DCI +0.14%, USD 369k

Not much on the go in Gaborone today as value traded amounted to $369k with most of the turnover coming from FNB (466k shares).

Egypt: EGX 30 +1.04%, USD 93m

The market managed to maintain its bullish momentum as the EGX30 ended the day up 1.04% to close at 6,407.10 points. Market volumes improved relative to recent average turnovers, trading a total turnover of USD 93m. The market was lead buy notable buying accumulation from local investors targeting names such as AMER (up 3.17%), SKPC (up 2.75%), and ACGC 2.32%). The real estate sector witnessed notable interest in names like TMGH and PHDC. Both stocks managed to reach a 52-week high today with TMGH gaining 2.48% to managed to EGP5.90 and PHDC 3.60% to EGP2.70.

Kenya: NSE 20 -0.11%, USD 5.8m

Activity increased today with value traded amounting to $5.8m as locals dominated proceedings. There was however strong foreign demand in Kenya Commercial Bank as then name rallied 1.1% to close at KES 47.00 on 1.75m shares. Equity Bank however closed the day lower at KES 35.50 (-1.4%) on local selling. Safcom managed to close the day in positive territory as the telco gained 0.5%. Kenya Power eased slightly (-0.7%) today to KES 15.05, following news that the Energy Regulatory Commission had lowered retail electricity tariffs, despite the power distributor asking for an increase in tariffs earlier in the year.

Mauritius: Semdex -0.01%, USD 1.02m

Decent day in Port Louis as value traded amounted to $1.02m with the usually illiquid ENL Land driving turnover as 205k shares traded. Terra was also rather active with 119ks shares traded while the two alrge banks were fairly subdued as 8k and 3m shares traded in MCB and SBM respectively.

Nigeria: ASI +0.53%, USD 30.33m

Another robust day in Lagos as value traded amounted to a very satisfactory $30.33m. The impressive run in Transcorp continued today as the name close limit up at N4.41 with $2.76m worth of shares changing hands. ETI ($4.72m), Guaranty Trust Bank ($3.65m), Oando ($2.59m) and Nestle ($2.56m) were also very active on the day thanks to a few large crosses and some good two-way flow. Banks closed the day lower with the Bank 10 Index falling -049% thanks to the likes of UBA (-2.34%) and Guaranty Trust Bank (-1.14%). Consumers (+0.37%) however closed the day firmer with UACN (+2.36%) and Nestle (+1.80%) being amongst the best performers. Guinness released Q1 2014 results with the name closing +0.02% higher at N235.05 on very low volume. The Central Bank kept interest rates unchanged at 12.00%.

South Africa: Top 40 -0.63%, USD 1.22bn

The JSE ended the day lower with the Top 40 Index falling 0.63% to close at 40,337 while value traded amounted to USD 1.22bn. Resources were the day's biggest losers with the Index falling 0.94% followed by Financials and Industrials which fell 0.70% and 0.47% respectively, The Rand was trading at 10.15 and 13.73 to the USD and EUR respectively by the time local markets closed.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.04%, Mining -1.02%, USD 1.29m

The mainstream industrials index closed 0.04% lower in Tuesday trades to 217.18pts despite a marked improvement in activity relative to yesterday. A 1.15% loss in Innscor to 86c alongwith other mid cap stock losses dragged the industrials in a session in which stocks traded sideways. The resources were in an unusually active mode with all stocks in the cluster recording trades. However the minings index was 1.02% weaker at close of call. Losses in Hwange of a 10% magnitude to 9c managed to neutralize the 16.67% gain in Falgold which traded at 7c. Bindura was stable at 1.8c where a considerable volume of 106,046 shares were spurned. For Bindura, this came after reports that the nickel producer is set to maximize returns from its Hunter’s Road resource, smelting and refinery assets after implementation of its revised mining plan.
