Botswana: DCI -0.04%, USD 355k

Not too much on the go in Gaborone today as value traded amounted to USD 355k with Letshego (932k shares) once again driving activity.

Egypt: EGX 30 +0.81%, USD 44m

The market managed to continue with its positive momentum, mainly from institutional investors (local and GCC) and local retail investors, leaving the EGX30 to end the day up 0.81% to close at 6,332.13 points. Market volumes remained weak but with improvement to recent turnovers with the market trading a total turnover of USD 44m. The market traded on bullish momentum lead by notable buying from local investors targeting names such as COMI, EIUD, and TMGH with each ending the day up 2.75%, 2.69%, and 1.42% respectively. International institutions started the day as notable buyers yet by mid session became sellers targeting names such as GTHE, ETEL, and SWDY, with each ending the day down 1.72%, 0.30%, and 0.21% respectively.

Kenya: NSE 20 -0.74%, USD 7.9m

Another rather solid day in Nairobi from an activity point of view as value traded amounted to $7.9m with foreigners being net sellers on the day as the accounted for 59% of total activity. Safcom (24m shares) was the day's most active stock as the telco continued to come under pressure and fell -3.7% to close at KES 10.35. Centum (2.48m shares) was extremely active thanks to a large cross as locals dominated activity in the name. Foreign selling continued in the two largest banks with Equity Bank falling -0.7% while Kenya Commercial Bank fell -1.1%.

Mauritius: Semdex +0.13%, USD 803k

A quiet day in Port Louis. The Sem-7 gained 16bps with gains in the 2 big banks leading the outperformance. SBM gained 95bps to Rs1.06 while MCB gained 12bps to Rs205.25. Losses in ENL Land (-99bps, Rs50) and IBL (-50bps, Rs100.50) offset these gains somewhat.

Nigeria: ASI -0.32%, USD 23.34m

It was an average day in Lagos as value traded amounted to $23.34m. The usual suspects in the form of Zenith Bank ($2.60m), Guaranty Trust Bank ($1.65m), First Bank ($1.64m) and Guinness ($1.16m) drove activity. There was also a fair amount of activity in Cadbury as 3.12m shares traded. Banks came under some pressure with the Bank 10 Index falling -0.55% thanks to the likes of First Bank (-1.15%) and Guaranty Trust Bank (-1.14%). Consumers also ended lower with the Consumer Goods Index falling -0.64% as Nigerian Breweries (-2.38%) and Dangote Flour (-2.20%) dragged the sector lower.

South Africa: Top 40 +0.84%, USD 1.19bn

The JSE ended the day higher with the Top 40 Index gaining 0.84% to close at 39,587 while value traded amounted to USD 1.19bn. Industrials were the day's biggest gainers with the Index gaining 1.08% followed Resources and Financials which gained 0.59% and 0.23% respectively. The Rand was trading at 10.43 and 14.23 to the USD and EUR respectively by the time local markets closed.

Zimbabwe: Industrials +0.06%, Mining unch, USD 2.96m

The mainstream ZSE industrial index closed in the black after recovering 0.06% to 212.84pts after two loss making sessions in a row. Most heavy caps were stable leaving CBZ and TSL to lead the resurge posting a 2.67% and 2.78% to 15.4c and 37c respectivelty. Meanwhile the mining index remained unchanged from yesterday’s level with only BNC trading in the cluster. The session was characterized by a special bargain in penny stock ZPI, where 10m shares exchanged hands bringing the count to 4 special bargains sailing in 4 successive trading sessions this week to date. Foreign investors were behind all the special deals in the week amounting to $10.16m from an overall value traded of $22.4m. In today’s session overall foreign inflows were softer at $2.4m bringing down the aggregate value traded to $2.96m as foreign participation remains dominant on the bourse.
