Botswana: DCI -0.02%, Vols USD 357k

The market closed the day lower with the DCI falling 0.02% to close at 6,965.76 while value traded amounted to USD 357k. There were no names that traded in positive territory today. Furnmart (159, -1) and Stanchart (900, -15) were the only counters that closed in negative territory.

BRVM: BRVM Composite +0.38%, BRVM 10 +0.52%, Vols USD 559k

The market closed the day higher with the BRVM Composite gaining 0.38% to close at 141.52 while the BRVM 10 gained 0.52% to close at 162.85. Value traded amounted to USD 559k. SOGB was the day's biggest gainer, rallying 5.77% to close at XOF 55,000. BOA NIGER was the day's biggest loser falling 3.23% to close at XOF 30,000.

Egypt: EGX 30 +0.31%, Vols USD 36m

The market managed to continue to trade higher today after yesterday’s session ,the EGX 30 ended the day 0.31% higher to close at 3777.88 points. Market volumes has notably improved compared to resent market volumes, market traded a total turnover of USD 36m. The market continues to rally on the back of market wide optimism of January 25th anniversary being a peaceful celebration, especially with Egypt's consumer confidence index and economic-policy confidence index both improving in December 2011. Names such as COMI TMGH and PIOH lead the market in terms of volumes, each ending the day up 0.20%, 2.88% and 5.33% respectively.

Investor mix:
•  Foreigners were net Buyers by 41.53 mn EGP and were 25.47% of the market.
•  Egyptians were net Buyers by 0.849 mn EGP and were 62.21% of the market.
•  Arabs were net Sellers by 41.61 mn EGP and were 12.31% of the market.
•  Institutions were net Buyers by 1.90 mn EGP and were 39.67% of the market.
•  Retail were net Sellers by 1.82 mn EGP and were 60.32% of the market.

Kenya: NSE 20 +0.12%, Vols USD 964k

The market ended the day lower with the NSE 20 Index falling 0.12% while value traded amounted to USD 964k. Foreign purchases accounted for USD 581k of total purchases while foreign sales accounted for USD 596k of total sales. Safcom was the biggest contributor towards value traded (USD 484k) with the name closing at 3.15. EQBNK was the second biggest contributor towards value traded (USD 79k) with the counter closing at 15.95. KNCB closed the day at 16.65 and was the third biggest contributor towards value traded (USD 72k).

Mauritius: Semdex -0.34%, Vols USD 426k

The market ended the day lower with the Semdex falling 0.34% to close at 1,871.27 while value traded amounted to USD 426k. MCB closed the day flat at 165.00 while SBM fell 0.60% to close at at 83.00. NMH fell 1.23% to close at 80.00 while Rogers closed the day unchanged at 330.00. Both ENL and Terra closed the day unchaged at 42.40 and 38.20 respectively.

Nigeria: ASI +0.02%, Vols USD 2.19m

One of the most quiet days in recent memory as a result of the ongoing strikes in the country. The market closed the day higher with the ASI gaining 0.02% to close at 20,883.28 while value traded amounted to USD 2.19m. The major Indices moved as follows today: FBT 10 + 0.02%, NSE 30 +0.01%, OILG -1.41%, INS 10 +0.29% and BNK 10 +0.24%. ETI, Zenith Bank, Guaranty Bank Access and Dangcem were the biggest contributors towards value traded.

South Africa: Top 40 +0.54%, Vols USD 1.33bn

The JSE ended the day higher with the Top 40 Index gaining 0.54% to close at 29,434 while value traded amounted to USD 1.33bn. Financials were the day's biggest gainers with the Index gaining 0.98% followed by Resources which gained 0.46% while Industrials fell 0.09%. The Rand was trading at 8.01 and 10.25 to the USD and EUR respectively by the time local markets closed.

Zambia: LuSE -0.75%, Vols USD 44k

The market recorded a turnover of USD 44,122. The counters that traded today include CECZ, FQM, LAFA, SCBL, ZMBF and ZSUG. The highest contributor towards turnover was ZMBF, 31,151 shares traded at an average price of ZMK 2,950, turnover amounted to USD 18,379. The second biggest contributor towards turnover FQM, 12,291 ZDR’s traded at an average price of ZMK 4,670, turnover amounted to USD 11,480.

Zimbabwe: Industrials +0.16%, Mining unch, Vols USD 841k

AFRICA SUN, CBZ, MEIKLES gained 14.75%, 2.31% and 12,8% respectively today. Other counters that closed in positive territory were AICO, NATFOODS, INNSCOR, SEEDCO and TN. STARAFRICA offset losses from yesterday’s trade by recovering 8.7%. Major losses were recorded in COLCOM, AFRE, DZHL, MASH and telecommunications giant ECONET. However, the losses did not affect the gains on the Index as it rose 0.16% to 140.21. No trades were recorded in the Minings sector, however, sellers were offering higher prices on the HWANGE and RIO ZIM counters while firm bids were recorded in BINDURA and FALGOLD.
