A much quieter day in Gaborone after yesterday’s excitement. There was some activity in Choppies (305t), FNBB (372t) and Barclays (564t) while Letshego did not trade at all and closed unchanged at 218t.
Despite less activity from the foreign market participants we saw total turnover remain buoyant while the index ticked up slightly higher. A chunky cross in BRITAM (local seller/foreign buyer) pushed the name up 4.8% to KES 9.90. In Safcom, as soon as any softness is detected we see foreign buying return, the name closed the day up 1.1% at KES 9.15 with the name ending well bid. EABL fell by 2.2% today to KES 316 with foreign selling pushing the name down. The banks were much quieter than normal and we saw Equity Bank and KCB close down 69bps and 1.56% at KES 36 and KES 47.25 respectively.
A strong day in Port Louis with aggressive buyers pushing the Sem-7 higher by 39bps. Strong gains were registered in NMH (+3.66%, Rs85) and Terra (+25bps, Rs40.10. All other stocks in the Sem-7 ended the day unchanged.
The JSE had a strong day as the Top 40 closed up 1.47%. The Rand remains in a tight range and was trading at R9.95, R15.90 and R13.43 vs the USD, GBP and EUR respectively at the time of writing.
Another dull day in Zimbabwe as the Industrials continue to grind higher. Seedco was the main driver as the name rose by 8.77% to 98c ahead of the 30 October EGM when a proposal will be put forward to sell a 25% stake worth USD40m to a New York listed Seed company. Econet fell slightly to 64.9c while Delta remained unchanged at 140c. Foreign participants were net buyers for the session.
