Botswana: DCI -0.04%, Vols USD 44k

A slow start to the week with only USD 44k worth trading today. Turnstar the only counter to record movement ended the day 1t higher at 160t. Letshego saw 25,542 shares trade in the name at 150t. NAP was unchanged at 230t. Barclays, Choppies and FNBB traded level at 710t, 160t and 280t respectively.

Egypt: EGX 30 -0.42%, Vols USD 64m

The market ended the day slightly lower, leaving the EGX30 to end the day down 0.42%, to close at 5061.69 points. Volumes were within market volumes , market traded a total turnover of USD 64m. Volatility continued throughout the day today in Egyptian blue-chips as institutional investors (International) continue to book profits, on the back of political instability as we get closer towards the presidential election a sense of anxiety as many investors continue to be bystanders opting to decrease their level of activity until further clarity has been shed. The real-estate sector witnessed notable selling, names such as PHDC, TMGH and OCDI ended the day down 2.94%, 1.13% and 3.41% respectively.

Investor mix:
•  Foreigners were net Sellers by 67.18 mn EGP and were 26.23% of the market.
•  Egyptians were net Buyers by 71.13 mn EGP and were 65.84% of the market.
•  Arabs were net Sellers by 3.95 mn EGP and were 7.93% of the market.
•  Institutions were net Sellers by 34.05 mn EGP and were 40.54% of the market.
•  Retail were net Buyers by 34.05 mn EGP and were 59.45% of the market.

Kenya: NSE 20 +0.81%, Vols USD 2.22m

Very quiet day in Nairobi with world markets taking an absolute beating, value traded amounted to $2.22m. Kenya Commercial Bank was the most active counter on the exchange with 2.47m shares traded and continued to rally to close at 24.25. The name goes ex-div on the 21 st of May. Other banking stocks COOP and EQBNK were also relatively active with 1.90m shares and 1.28 shares changing hands in the name respectively. Foreigners were very quiet but remained net buyers accounting for $800k of total purchases while they accounted for $480k of total sales. The market closed higher with the NSE 20 Index gaining 0.81% to close at 3,628.64. In other news, the price of gasoline was raised by 2.2% to 121.13 Shillings per litre.

Mauritius: Semdex +0.33%, Vols USD 1.3m

The day's turnover was mostly attributable to MCB which saw 98,445 shares trade in the name 0.60% higher at Rs168. SBM ended the day 1.25% higher at Rs81 on 6k shares. ENL Land (O) ended 0.26% higher at Rs39. Bramer traded at a vwap of Rs9.4982 after trading at a low of Rs9.40. The Dem had an active day with Rs6.2m worth trading today. Phoenix Investment was actively traded in with 19,400 shares trading at Rs134.

Nigeria: ASI -0.31%, Vols USD 14.72m

Rather quiet in Nigeria with value traded amounting to $14.72m. Banking stocks once again led from the front in terms of value traded while the Bank 10 Index gained 0.13%. Guaranty and UBA were extremely active with 30.3m and 111m shares changing hands in the names respectively. Total crosses in UBA amounted to 73m shares while there were 11.7m shares that crossed in Guaranty today. Guinness was also rather active with a cross of 484k shares going through at 235. The market closed lower with the ASI falling 0.31% to close at 22,552.42. In other news clashes between police and militants in the northeast left 5 dead.

South Africa: Top 40 -1.66%, Vols USD 1.22bn

The JSE ended the day lower with the Top 40 Index falling 1.66% to close at 29,577 while value traded amounted to USD 1.22bn. Resources were the day's biggest losers with the Index falling 2.36% followed by Financials and Industrials which fell 1.71% and 0.97% respectively. The Rand was trading at 8.17 and 10.50 to the USD and EUR respectively by the time local markets closed.

Zambia: LuSE -0.52%, Vols USD 150k

Not too much to report in Zambia with value traded amounting to USD 150k thanks to a cross in SCBL. The names that traded included CECZ, PUMA, NATB, REIZ, SCBL, ZMBF, ZNCO and ZSUG. SCBL was the biggest contributor towards turnover with value traded in the name amounting to USD 136k. ZMBF was the second biggest contributor towards turnover with value traded in the name amounting to USD 5k.

Zimbabwe: Industrial -0.11%, Mining -1.84%, Vols USD 2.6m

A busy day in Harare with the market recording turnover of USD2,633,281.06 attributable to Delta which saw 3,117,273 shares trade at 70c. Reasonable vols were also recorded in Dairibord and Innscor. Dairibord saw 551,819 shares trade at 16.50c while 190,000 Innscor traded 1c higher at 54c. Natfoods ended the day 2c higher at 92c. TPH added on 2c to end the day at 12c. Lafarge lost 5c at 50c while CFI was down 1c at 5c on only 158 shares. Mining's dragged down by a 3.01c loss in Rio Zim ended the day 1.84% lower at 85.20pts. Rio traded at 49.99c on 7000 shares. Bindura was unchanged at 3.50c.
