A mammoth day in Gaborone as some genuinely chunky trades in Choppies (420t) and FNBB (415t) bumped total turnover to am impressive $5.9m Letshego also saw some activity and closed at 240t.
The Kenyan market got a big hiding today as local sellers pushed the index lower. EABL lost a very disappointing 6.2% (KES 259) on decent volumes. Parent company reported 1H14 results earlier in the weak stressing weaknesses in Emerging Markets. KNCB also got hurt. Despite a quiet start an aggressive local seller came in and hit the name all the way down to KES 43.25 (-4.4%). Safcom remains in free fall and lost another 4.3% to KES 11.00.
As has been the case recently we saw a number of crosses liven up proceedings. Banks closed the day marginally higher by 4bps as real strength in UBA (+5.29%, N8.16) helped the sector higher. There were some chunky trades in FBNH, GTB and Zenith. Consumers remain vulnerable and lost a further 69bps during the session and weakness in NB (-1.85%, N156.50), Guinness (-1.77%, N222) and Unilever (-1.82%, N54) hurt the sector. There was also some chunky trades in DangCem as the heavyweight closed down 22bps at N234.49.

Another active day in Johannesburg while the index closed slightly in the red. Golds closed up an impressive 2.75% followed by banks which were up 1.36%. The ZAR has traded steadily and was trading at R11.23, R18.51 and R15.15 vs the USD, GBP and EUR respectively at the time of writing.
The main Industrials index rose for a second straight day. Yet again it was Delta which gained a further 52bps to 118.61c which led the outperformance. The other large caps were stable with the likes of Innscor, OKZ and Econet trading at 75c, 20c and 60c respectively. Econet was the most active stock on the day with the bulk of today’s flows coming from foreign investors.
