Movers & Shakers: May 23, 2016

Botswana: DCI +0.02%, USD 4.1m

A very impressive start to the week in Gaborone thanks to Choppies as 7.4m shares changed hands while there was also some good action in RDCP as 6.3m shares traded.

Kenya: NSE 20 -0.39%, USD 7.5m

Activity finally returned to the NSE mostly thanks to some chunky foreign crosses in EABL. The brewer closed at KES298 (+30bps) with more than $4.5m changing hands in the name. There was also some decent foreign activity in KNCB (+60bps, KES41.00) while the rest of the market was practically at a standstill.

Mauritius: Semdex -0.27%, USD 740k

Another sub-par start to the week in Port Louis with most of the action taking place in MCBG as 95k shares changed hands in the name while the rest of the market was quiet.

Nigeria: ASI -0.37%, USD 9.5m

It was a mostly dull affair in Lagos today. The market initially opened extremely weak as some panic took hold due to rumours that the FX revaluation will not materialize. Most of this weakness was in Tier 1 Banks with most of these names trading at limit down early in the session. However, as the session wore on some buyers returned with the sector eventually closing down 2.01%. Action was heavily centered in Zenith (-4.8%, N15.17) and GTB (-89bps, N20.02). Consumers fell by a more modest 41bps although the sector was extremely quiet.

Please note that the index figure above is correct at the time of writing.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.66%, USD 306k

Not much on the go in Harare to start the week with small action in a few names driving proceedings and no real volume worth noting.
